For three days, June 2-4, 2005, more than 30 experts and artists, as well as representatives from cultural and academic institutions from Spain, Portugal and the different countries of Latin America, offered lectures, presentations and debates dealing with pertinent aspects regarding the latest trends in art and digital technologies, with special focus on the Iberian-American context.

The principal aims of the symposium were to create an initial forum for encounters that allowed participants to meet face to face and the public to learn about their work, while also promoting the exchange of ideas and information regarding the current situation of media art in the relevant countries. To that end, in addition to the main conferences, presentations and round tables, the symposium offered an ample parallel program, which included exhibitions of media art from Spain, Portugal, Columbia, Peru, Argentina, Chile and Brazil.

Each day of the symposium was dedicated to a specific theme, which was addressed by the guest speakers. First day's theme, "Art/expanded systems: Laboratories in process,” offered reflections about the interconnections among disciplines, technologies and materials, one of the principal characteristics of contemporary media art. The patent process of expansion and interrelation of different media results in new formats, such as interactive installations, robotic art, virtual reality, media performance… like we find in the work of the Brazilian media artist Lucas Bambozzi, one of the guest participants, along with scientist and theoretician José-Carlos Mariategui, president of Alta Tecnología Andina ATA (an NGO devoted to artistic, scientific, and technological research and development in Latin America).
